Field Day 2014

Field Day is coming! Save the date: Friday June 6, 2014.

(Rain date Friday June 13, 2014)

It is parents like you that help make this day fun at Lincoln School.

Our morning activities will begin in two different areas again this year. Lincoln School for grades K-2 and Manchester Field for grades 3 – 5.  After lunch, all of the grades will participate together for the afternoon events, including the famous 5th Grade Tug-O-War. Recruit a friend and click on the following link – Lincoln School: Field Day 2014 Volunteer Sign up. If you would like to know more about the games, click on Field Day game descriptions and maps.

If you are unable to help on Field Day, please consider pitching in with some of the leg work that needs to be done for set up. Or lend an item on the Sign-up list.

Classroom teachers will be taking a lunch count for Field Day on Thursday, June 5th.  If your child would like to purchase lunch for Field Day, please confirm that with your child before the start of school on Thursday.

Thank you all so much, without you we could not have such an exciting day!!

Spring Clean up SUNDAY!

Help plant some flowers and spruce up Lincoln!  Our Spring Planting and Clean-Up is scheduled for Sunday, May 4th from 11-2 (rain date is Sunday, May 18th, 11-2).  Thanks to a special donation from the Town of Winchester, we’re adding some new plantings and beds, so come help make Lincoln beautiful!  Please bring your shovels, rakes, trowels and tarps.  ANY AMOUNT of time you can give is appreciated, and kids are welcome and encouraged to come.  Drinks and snacks will be provided.  Hope to see you at Lincoln!

Reminder: Tomorrow is GREEN DAY!

In celebration of Earth Day and as part of our ongoing Green initiatives, tomorrow is GREEN DAY at Lincoln!  Three things for our families to do:

1.  Bring a Waste-Free Lunch:  The Green Team is challenging the Lincoln School community to bring in lunches and snacks that produce little to no waste. We are working with our cafeteria staff to plan on using compostable trays for school lunches on that day.

2.  Volunteer to help with Waste-Free Lunch Day:  we need parent volunteers to assist in all lunches and with the waste audit tomorrow.   If you are able to volunteer any time between 11:45-2:45, please contact Assistant Principal Lisa Cormier at Lcormier@winchester.k12.ma.us

3.  Wear Green!  All students, staff, and parents are encouraged to wear green in support of our environment.

Message from WHS Working Group

WHS Renovation Decision: Are you ready?

Do you have enough information to make an informed decision about the December 10 debt exclusion override ballot question regarding Winchester High School?

The Project: The project is designed to address three critical needs for our community: an increasing enrollment; an obsolete building infrastructure; and an educational program whose needs are no longer supported by the current physical layout.  The comprehensive rebuilding of WHS would address all three goals, at a cost that takes advantage of state financial aid now available.  If voters approve Winchester’s share of funding in next month’s election, the project would be completed by fall 2017 with $85.4M from Winchester and $44.5M from the state (MSBA), a project valued at $129.9M. If the override is not approved and Winchester does not have a comprehensive solution for WHS, the town must still address pressing and expensive repairs to the facility, likely without MSBA support.

Be An Informed Voter: To participate in the December 10th ballot question, Winchester residents must be registered to vote in Winchester.  Absentee ballots are also available at the Town Clerk’s office. (Read more here)  Polls will be open from 7am until 8pm on Tuesday, December 10. Go to our website (winchesterhsproject.com) for voting locations:

WHS Project Communications Working Group, consisting of representatives of the EFPBC, School Committee, Board of Selectmen and the Superintendent of Schools and Town Manager have been engaged in providing information to prepare citizens to vote on December 10.  It is not too late to learn about the project:

Finally, please read the series of articles that have been published in the media this fall, each addressing one aspect of the project.  For instance:

1.         Costs;  Meeting Three Goals:  EFPBC member Charles Tseckares and the Communications Working Group outlined project costs and provided information regarding the financial and educational consequences if funding for the project is not approved.

2.         Failing Building; Phasing:  School Committee Member (and architect) Chris Nixon addressed the ways in which the facility’s aging and inflexibility has rendered it obsolete – and non-compliant with seismic, disability access, fire and other building codes. EFPBC and School Committee member, Cindy Bohne detailed how the project might be phased over the three academic years of the project

3.         Enrollment; Educational Program:  Superintendent McAlduff authored an article describing how a renovated WHS must accommodate projected enrollment of 1,313 students by 2017 – an increase of 44.8% over 2000.  WHS Principal Tom Gwin and the high school leadership team wrote about how the proposed project would rebuild the academic pods to create space that promotes educational values like critical thinking, creativity and effective communication.

Other articles included a description of how the project could provide a more energy-efficient, sustainable building and an analysis of the process of selecting the right site for a future high school.

A Collaborative Effort – Thank you to the countless groups who have contributed over the past two years to make this a collaborative effort: Town Manager’s Office, Superintendent of Schools, Energy Management Committee, Sustainability Committee, Design Review Committee, Planning Board, Finance Committee, Town Meeting Members, School Parent Associations, faculty and staff of Winchester High School, Board of Selectmen and School Committee.

Respectfully submitted – The Winchester High School Communication Work Group

BOKS is coming to Lincoln!

We are thrilled to announce that BOKS is coming to Lincoln Elementary School!  BOKS is a program that provides kids 45 minutes of physical activity before school, 2 times per week.    The program not only provides an opportunity for children to get physically active, but studies also show that the program has a positive impact on academic performance.  Each of Winchester’s other four elementary schools currently run the BOKS program with great success.  Now Lincoln can get in on all the fun!

We are offering the BOKS program at no charge because parent volunteers will manage and staff the program.   The first pilot session will run for 12 weeks, before school, from February 3 – May 9, 2014 and will be limited to 40 students.

We are asking all parents to fill out the survey emailed to you to help us prepare for a successful launch.  Please fill out the survey by Friday, December 13, even if you don’t think your child will attend.

The official sign-up for the program will be via online registration in January.  The program will be first come, first served unless you agree to become a leader or dedicated volunteer, in which case your child is guaranteed a spot in the program.  If you’d like to volunteer, please indicate your interest in the survey.  Note:  please consider some level of volunteering! We need a lot of parents/caregivers to run this program as BOKS requires at least 5-6 parent volunteers per class (12 parents per week).

Week of December 2

We hope you enjoyed a fantastic Thanksgiving break, fully of family, friends, and lots of great food and football!
